BCHU adds fatal COVID-19 cases after data quality check

Published on: September 27, 2022

Brantford, ON – The Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) has added seven fatal cases to its local case count and removed two previously categorized COVID-19 deaths after conducting a data quality check. These changes bring the current total of COVID-19 fatal cases in Brant to 90.

Of the seven fatal cases being added to the local count, six date back between January and February of 2022. The remaining fatal case occurred on August 2, 2022.

Two previously counted COVID-19 deaths have been removed as they no longer meet the Ministry of Health’s definition of a COVID-19 death, after further investigation. This occurs occasionally after an autopsy has been completed and COVID-19 is found not to be a contributing or underlying cause of death.

Due to ongoing data entry and data quality assurance activities in the Case and Contact Management (CCM) system, BCHU, along with other public health units, continually review and clean up COVID-19 data, correcting for missing or overcounted cases and deaths. These corrections can result in data spikes, negative numbers and current totals being different from previously reported case and death counts.
