Brantford, ON – 209 students whose immunization records are not up to date with the Brant County Health Unit have been suspended from school until their records can be updated. The suspension takes effect immediately (Thursday, April 19, 2018) and includes 152 elementary and 57 secondary school students.
“Immunizations are important so students can be protected from many serious diseases that could spread easily in schools,” says Ruth Gratton, Manager, Clinic Services at the Health Unit. “We also aim to have all students’ immunization information so we are prepared in case of an outbreak.”
Suspension letters were mailed to the homes of students on March 5, 2018 who were born in 2001 and 2010 and who, according to Health Unit records, needed one or more immunizations in accordance with the Ontario’s Immunization of School Pupils Act.
“The number of suspension letters sent out has continued to decrease every year,” says Gratton, “We’re encouraged that this continued decrease means that our community takes immunization seriously.”
If a student has already received immunizations that haven’t been reported to the Health Unit, parents can report them through one of the following ways:
