Brantford, ON – With the flu vaccine now available to the public through pharmacies and family doctors, the Brant County Health Unit urges everyone to get their flu shot so they can help protect their community.
“The flu shot is the best protection against the flu,” says Dr. Lock, Medical Officer of Health at the Brant County Health Unit. “Because it takes two weeks after the vaccine is given for the body to build up immunity, we recommend everyone gets the shot as early as possible.”
This year Brant County Health Unit is encouraging everyone to visit their pharmacy or doctor for their flu shot, as the Health Unit isn’t hosting any community clinics.
“When you get the flu shot you’re not only protecting yourself from the flu, you’re protecting people around you,” says Dr. Lock. “This is especially important for kids, pregnant women and seniors, who are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from the flu.”
The flu can be spread by direct contact or through the air by coughing and sneezing. Common symptoms include runny nose, sore through, high fever, headache, muscle aches, coughing and fatigue.
