Free Dental Care

Oral health is part of your overall health. With a healthy mouth you can eat, speak and smile in comfort, which helps you feel physically, socially and mentally well.

Free dental services are available for eligible children and seniors in Brantford and the County of Brant.

Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) is a government-funded program offering free dental services to children under the age of 17 from low-income households. This program is operated through local, participating dental offices and covers the cost of treatment including:

  • Checkups
  • Cleanings
  • Cavity fillings
  • X-rays
  • Scaling
  • Tooth extraction
  • Emergency dental care (including treatment of toothache)

If they qualify, your child(ren) will get regular dental services at no cost to you. They do not need to have an urgent dental condition to qualify.

– Check to see you/your child meets the requirements.

– Fill out the HSO General Application.

– You will receive a response once your Application form has been processed.

– Once your child’s enrolment is confirmed, you will get a Healthy Smiles Ontario dental card in the mail.

–  Check with your child’s dental provider to ensure they accept HSO patients. You must present your HSO card to your dental provider at each visit to receive services under the program.

The Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (OSDCP) is a government-funded dental care program. It provides free, routine dental services for low-income seniors who are 65 years-of-age or older.

Certain dental procedures under the OSDCP have limits based on scientific and clinical criteria; your OSDCP dental provider can provide more information based on your situation.

Coverage includes:

  • check-ups, including scaling, fluoride and polishing
  • repairing broken teeth and cavities
  • x-rays
  • removing teeth or abnormal tissue (oral surgery)
  • anesthesia
  • treating infection and pain (endodontic services)
  • treating gum conditions and diseases (periodontal services)

Eligibility

You can apply for the program if you meet all the requirements below

  • 65 years-of-age or older
  • resident of Ontario
  • meet the income requirements:
    • an annual net income of $22,200 or less for a single senior
    • a combined annual net income of $37,100 or less for a couple
  •  have no other form of dental benefits, including private insurance or dental coverage under another government program such as Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program or Non-Insured Health Benefits.

We will verify your income using your Social Insurance Number (SIN), that you will provide when you apply to the program. We will use your SIN to verify your annual new income from your tax return. Learn how you can apply if you don’t have a SIN.

Dentures

Dental prosthetics (prosthodontic services), including dentures, will be partially covered. Please email BCHU Dental Services for more information.

Coverage period

Once you are enrolled in the program, your coverage period is for up to one year. Your coverage will end on July 31, every year, no matter when you enroll. Learn more about renewing your yearly coverage.

You can apply to the program online or by mail.

If you and your spouse or common-law partner are applying to the program, you must submit two separate applications.

Before you begin the online application, you need:

  • your date of birth
  • a valid Ontario address
  • your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or Temporary Taxation Number (TTN)
  • to have filed your taxes last year

If you do not have a SIN or did not file taxes in the previous, please complete the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program application through guarantor form.
